Welcome to Vetinterferon |
This is an information platform on interferons and their use in small animal medicine.
The aim of this site is to enhance the knowledge on interferons by providing
scientific references,
field reports and general information.
« Scientific references » are articles or congress abstracts
published on interferons related to veterinary medicine. They cover
different aspects that can be useful to the veterinary profession.
« Field reports » contain clinical cases that were published by
practitioners who experienced the use of interferons in different areas.
They are briefly reported to provide helpful information in practice.
All these data are regularly updated. |

Interferons are cytokines, naturally occurring cellular glycoproteins secreted in response to virus infections.
They exert their effects by binding to membrane receptors, which is followed by intracellular signalling events. These ultimately lead to enhanced target cell killing by lymphocytes and inhibition of virus replication in infected cells. In human medicine, various recombinant interferons are approved to treat e.g. viral hepatitis. In companion animal medicine, we will now witness new applications of a recombinant ‘immune response modifier’ that has been found beneficial in controlled field studies.
